Be able to integrate their ideas with those of others using summary, paraphrase, quotation, analysis, and synthesis of relevant sources.
Prompt: Review your final draft of the chosen Significant Writing Project as you prepare to write a section of your statement titled Learning Outcome 2. In that section, explain the ways you used sources as evidence in the paper, including at least one specific example that demonstrates your ability to select, integrate, and explain quotations (about 200-450 words). You will likely draw from the ways your class has discussed the practice of integrating your ideas with others. Revisit your early efforts at integrating your ideas with evidence to help you think (and write) about your development.
In project number two, we were tasked with analyzing meals from different authors, classmates, and prior peers. With this project, I really open up and developed my writing skills much more than the prior project. This helped my to create an overall basic motive of the essay besides just the thesis. In this project, my theme was the idea of happiness, which worked extremely well considering that each piece I referenced had a feeling of happiness they discussed, it became a lot easier to reference each piece back to one another. For example, I used Maddie Shaw’s “Food For Thought” essay and referenced her father’s homemade Mac and Cheese. This was a good source to use because it really gave a strong happiness feeling which could be related to the other peers essays. I also used Diego Fernandez’s “Food For Thought” essay because it was much different than the others. In everybody else’s that I reviewed, they were all at home, but Diego’s transported him. “Pastelillos have always been a special meal for me, bringing me back to Puerto Rico when a plane couldn’t”. This example gave some diversity in the piece because the food reminded him of the culture and the experience of Puerto Rico. In addition to using examples from peers, the “Little Seagull” book also helped because it gave me specific ways and templates to introduce examples and quotes into my work. Prior to this essay, my source evidence and referencing skills were lacking because I would try and put the quote into the piece just to show that it had some sort of reference. However, now I understand how to effectively analyze the quote and insert it into the proper place.
